| Inspect hands to ensure that they are not soiled. If visibly soiled, washing with antimicrobial soap and water is required. |

| Apply an adequate amount of hospital-approved alcohol-based hand cleaner (approximately 3 ml). |

|
| Rub hands together, ensuring contact with all parts of hands and digits. |
|
|
| Rubs surfaces together until hands are dry. |

| Ensure hand rubbing lasts longer than 15 seconds for adequate antimicrobial activity. |

| Antimicrobial Soap and Water |
| Turn on water to the desired temperature and avoid splashing. Ensure steady stream. |

| Wet hands and apply an adequate amount of soap (avoid patient's bar soap). |

| Rub hands together vigorously for at least 20 seconds, ensuring coverage of all surfaces. |

|
| Rinse hands under running water from forearms to fingers without touching the sink. Ensure all soap is removed. |

| Dry hands aseptically with paper towels. |

|
| Dispose of towels properly. |

|
| Use a clean paper towel to turn off water. |

| Dispose of additional towels without allowing hands to come into contact with any surfaces. |
