Skill Assessment - Measure Oxygen Saturation (Pulse Oximetry)

Step Pass Unsatisfactory
Preparation
Clinical standards for procedures and interventions.
Turns on the oximeter and allows for appropriate device warm-up.
Assessment
Selects a site for the probe application and checks for adequate perfusion; removes nail polish or artificial nails if necessary.
Cleans site and nondisposable probe with alcohol prep pad.
Attaches probe to the selected site and secures.
Allows for proper stabilization.
Observes the pulse rate on the oximeter and correlates it with the manually measured rate and/or ECG rate.
Records the pulse rate, saturation, respiratory rate, and pattern.
Post-Intervention
Disconnects and turns unit off if not applying continuous monitoring.
Disinfects probe if nondisposable.
