| Preparation |
| Clinical Standards for Procedures and Interventions. |
| Verifies provider order or protocol; reviews chart for indications, goals, contraindications, and recent response to therapy. |
| Identifies and gathers required equipment: nasal cannula (appropriate size), oxygen source, flowmeter, oxygen tubing with humidifier (if indicated for >4 L/min or comfort), pulse oximeter, signage per policy. |
| Assessment |
| Assesses Vital Signs. |
| Obtains baseline SpO2, respiratory pattern, and need for oxygen. Assesses contraindications and precautions (CO2 retention risk). |
| Implementation |
| Connects cannula to flowmeter; sets initial flow (typically 1 to 6 L/min) per order and clinical need. |
| Positions cannula prongs in nares correctly; secures tubing and adjusts for comfort. |
| Assesses SpO2 and titrates flow to maintain target saturation range per protocol. |
| Monitoring & Modifications |
| Monitors patient tolerance, work of breathing, and oxygenation/ventilation response during the intervention. |
| Adjusts technique/device settings per patient response; notifies provider if significant change is made to oxygen flow. |
| Titrates per orders to the lowest effective setting or to the ordered home regimen |
