Identifies and gathers required equipment: large-volume nebulizer, sterile water reservoir, corrugated tubing with drain bag, aerosol mask or tracheostomy collar, and oxygen source. |
Assessment |
Assesses patient condition, indications for humidification, and baseline oxygenation status. |
Implementation |
Fills sterile water reservoir and assembles nebulizer system per manufacturer instructions. |
Sets prescribed FiO2 and initial flow rate per manufactors guidelines to achieve visible aerosol mist at the exhalation port. |
Monitoring & Modifications |
Adjusts flow rate as needed to maintain continuous visible mist; decreasing flow if aerosol output causes excessive rain-out. |
Checks for condensation in the tubing; drains accumulated water into the drain bag to prevent condensate accumulation into the patient circuit. |
Inspects drain bag regularly and empties or replaces as needed to maintain proper drainage and prevent backflow. |
Ensures tubing is positioned to prevent kinking, occlusion, or back pressure; replaces components if aerosol output is obstructed. |
Assesses patient tolerance, breath sounds, and oxygen saturation; adjusts FiO2 or flow as clinically indicated. |
Evaluates effectiveness of humidification therapy and patient goals of therapy. |
